I wanted to like this book, but I literally thought it would never end. So repetitive. In the end I liked no one - especially myself because I kept reading . . .

I would consider this as much a psychological thriller as a murder mystery. Once you get past the premise of a murder victim with a doppelgänger who just happens to be an investigating detective it is a fascinating story. Cassie Maddox and…

One of French's many gifts as a mystery writer is the ability to craft characters who are just a bit larger than life but still completely believable as developing human beings, and then to let the characters do their own thing to drive…

Dublin Murder Squad series #2
May 06, 2022FloraWest rated this title 5 out of 5 stars
One of my favorites of the Dublin Murder Squad series. Character study is French's forte and this one of Cassie Maddox is complex and engaging.

This is the second terrific novel in French's Dublin Murder Squad series. What makes this series interesting is that French adopts the perspective of a different character in each novel. So, while they focus on the murder squad, each…

Not my favorite of hers. I found the characters tedious.

This story was well done. The length was a little longer than my usual reading choices, but it definitely caught my attention and kept it the whole way through. This is not the typical who-done-it. The readers suspicions move so…

Couldn't finish. Not nearly as good as "Into the Woods" - implausible plot and writing not as crisp.

French has an eclectic storytelling style, mixing mystery with thriller, using poetic language and dabbling in philosophical, reflective commentary via her characters. Recommended. Each book in this series can be read as a…

2nd Novel
Sep 14, 2021gloryb rated this title 5 out of 5 stars
A whopping 700 pages with the last 200 pages a page turner. French has a writing style I enjoy reading. She has excellent character and plot development, too, being able to describe places, actions, and inner thoughts in minute detail. In…

OK, I think I gave this one a fair effort. But by 330 pages in, I just wanted it to end. I’m not usually an impatient reader. I don’t require frequent “jolts” of excitement to hold my attention. But let’s face it, as police procedurals go,…

Tana French has an excellent way of creating complex characters that feel alive when reading about them. This particular story had some flaws and required a suspension of reality for it to work. Enjoyed the novel nonetheless.

A complex, well-written story of an undercover cop, who tries to find the truth behind the murder of a young woman who looks just like her by infiltrating a tight group of her friends. Character-driven and a twisty plot.

I wanted to like this book but you have to suspend your belief so much more than usual, for a crime thriller. The whole premise was hard to buy into and the implausible parts were distracting. In the end the story gets very repetitive to…

This second of Tara French's Dublin Murder Squad books is narrated by Detective Cassie Maddox, who was the co-investigator and best friend to narrator Rob Ryan in the first, In The Woods. This time out, a young woman bearing a startling…

The Likeness is an intelligent, slow-burn murder mystery set in Dublin and its suburbs. Tana French writes beautifully and you will want to savor, rather than devour this novel. This is the second part of a series, but you do not need to…

What I like about this author so much is her complicated language choices. My page-a-minute rate dips quite a bit when I read her because I savor every word. Once again, the "mystery" here is fairly immaterial; I feel like French is much…

I took the book out of the library, read a few pages and simply decided to not read it. I enjoy reading mysteries but not this one.

Tana French definitely has a deft hand: with characters, setting, and plotting. There is a wonderful interleaving of this book with the first one. All the characters are well-defined and unique from one another and they move through a…

It was very readable, but I think that Tana French is not very good at endings. In a mystery, in my opinion, you need to really wow people at the end. So although her book on the whole was gripping, to me the ending was a bit of a bore.

Maybe it was the wrong timing for me in reading this one, having just finished two fantastic reads that I loved a lot, but for me Cassie was just a little too smart-ass.... a touch here and there, in my opinion, works better than…

Although I was bummed to not be in Rob's head again (I love an unreliable narrator) or ever find out what happened to him as a child in the woods, French has crafted another atmospheric, creepy mystery with The Likeness. Cassie Maddox…

An unusual murder investigation story from award-winning mystery author Tana French, featuring Detective Cassie Maddox at its heart. I highly recommend this story to fans of Donna Tartt’s The Secret History; both stories share a keen…
