" 'most times, she described him in effeminate terms. "poor, sweet james," she'd say. or, "dear sensitive james." lots of eyerolls. she was too outwardly progressive to admit he wasn't masculine enough for her'.

Enjoyed Shutter Island and Mystic River much more but this one was okay.

While this may not be Lehane's best book, it is still so much better than a lot of the books that end up on the bestseller lists (those "written" by James Patterson and Stuart Wood instantly spring to mind).

A little Lehane lite when compared to a Mystic River, but a very enjoyable book nevertheless. Lehane has never disappointed me yet. Rachel, a journalist with a good dollop of neuroses (well-earned with that mother of hers), is not at a…

As others note the plot starts out very well then devolves into a "Three's Company" inane story with little to no payoff to characterizations or themes established in the first half of the book. It seems like the publishing deadline was…

Very good book....well written and holds attention till the end. However, ending was not complete.

I am a constant reader but this is absolutely the most disappointing book I've ever read. A total waste of time.

3.5 stars - Agree with earlier commenter that this tale starts so promisingly and then - even though the characterizations and dialog stay strong - the plot veers from closely observed true-to-life ==> hollywood-ville. As a willing…

So disappointed. I loved Shutter Island and Mystic River. The beginning of the story is great; the main character is interesting. But the plot is completely preposterous. Don't waste your time.

It took a while to get into where this story was going exactly, given the several large story lines that developed in the first third of the book. There were several plot twists but Lehane concluded with an ending that left me hanging a…

Excellent author, excellent book. Many twists and turns. About a woman's experiences as a brave reporter with panic attacks and agoraphobia, a failed marriage, professional disgrace, and a marriage to a man she thinks is perfect. He…

Reading this book was like coming of age in the glory years of America from Si, se puede right through the sane, rational and long overdue diplomacy with Cuba; then dying in Trump's first year. Since this is most likely going to happen to…

Dennis Lehane has written a couple really wonderful books. this is not one of them. Riding on the "Gone Girl" craze

It is a three or four part story about Rachel who was born to unconventional parents, shaped by them and others, constantly transformed as she became an adult, career woman, lovers, marriages until she was drawn in a scam with dangerous…

This was like two different books: Rachel's life growing up and then her life with Brian. And the two didn't really have much to do with each other. A similar book written from Brian's perspective would have been a better read. I finished…

If you like Dennis Lehane you will not like this book. He takes almost half the book to build the character and when he finally get's to something even resembling a plot it's pretty weak. I say this as someone who is a big fan of his…

I am relieved to find that others think this is a flop as well as me. I have read everything Lehane has ever written and dumped this one on Chapter 2 and thought how could you do that this is Dennis ....is there something wrong with you?…

This one took a long time to get going. The first half of the book introduces the main character and her demons, and it's only halfway through that the author inserts her into an actual plot. There are passages of really good writing but a…

This book was so much fun! Rachel is a journalist who had a stellar career but suffered a nervous breakdown on-air when covering a horrible situation in Haiti. Her marriage falls apart and, suffering from agoraphobia, she becomes a virtual…

First time reading this author and without a doubt will be my last. Why oh why did I waste precious time on this when there are so many wonderfully written books out there.

Couldn't finish this one. It was nothing like the other Lehane novels I have greatly enjoyed. The plot was SO slow-moving and tedious.

This is a beach read - don't expect high literature and suspend your sense of reality- and, you will be sucked in. If you liked Girl on the Train, you will like this book.
