The denouement of the Maturin/Diana storyline here was the highlight by far, the scenes of shipboard life and derring-do were too derivative, I felt, of O'Brian's own earlier work in the series, as though he could not be bothered to introduce any new characters or locations and so just returned to his "greatest hits" of the first 1-6 volumes. That said, derivative O'Brian is still better than 9/10ths of all the rest of the historical fictions that has been published in the last 30 years, so by all means read and enjoy!
