In print for over fifty years, D'Aulaires Book of Greek Myths has introduced generations to Greek mythology—and continues to enthrall young readers.

Here are the greats of ancient Greece—gods and goddesses, heroes and monsters—as freshly described in words and pictures as if they were alive today:
• Powerful Zeus, king of the gods, with his fistful of thunderbolts
Hermes, mischievous trickster and messenger of the gods
• Gray-eyed Athena, goddess of wisdom and battle strategy
• The monstrous Minotaur, slain by brave Theseus
• Snake-haired Medusa the gorgon, turning enemies to stone with her steely stare
Hercules the mightiest, part mortal, part god

These and other equally magnificent figures parade across the pages, their heroic deeds and petty squabbles illuminated in full dimension.

No other volume of Greek mythology has inspired as many young readers as this timeless classic. Both adults and children alike will find this book a treasure for years to come.

“For any child fortunate enough to have this generous book . . . the kings and heroes of ancient legend will remain forever matter-of-fact; the pictures interpret the text literally and are full of detail and witty observation.”—The Horn Book

“The drawings . . . are excellent and excitingly evocative.”—The New York Times

I love the D'Aulaire's writing. Their prose flows beautifully, and they don't flood their pages with too much information. They are the perfect introduction to the Greek Myths for children, and a lovely revisit for the cild at heart.

Very fond childhood memories of this book. Wonderful illustrations, very well written. It would be nice if the stories were less sanitized, but if that were the case no publisher would have distributed it as a children's book in the first place, in our sexually repressed culture. Don't worry, most of the violence is included (Prometheus still gets his liver eaten by an eagle every 24 hours, for example)
Please check out the underappreciated D'Aulaires book on Norse mythology (as a child I thought this was way cooler than the Greek one - it's darker and bleaker) and the book on trolls as well. I personally think all these books deserve to be as ubiquitous as Dr. Seuss.

I enjoyed this book as a child, and it still works well telling the stories of Greek gods and heroes.

Entertaining re-telling of ancient Greek myths prettified to make them suitable to a younger audience.
