A very deliberate, precise and at times ponderously paced examination of the human situation.
What exists behind our masks? Even the most casual interactions have hidden aspects, often sexual. There is much that remains hidden, what are the hidden connections and influences? Do we really know all the why's of our lives? Do people even know what a Xmas tree really is and why they put them everywhere? As with individuals, society and governments have their hidden and sometimes dark and dangerous elements. Our eyes are wide open but shut to much we do not know and cannot consciously see.

Maybe we should suspend the reductive question, "Is it any good or not?" and acknowledge that it's a fascinating, tantalizing film that will continue to be argued about.

Eyes Wide Shut is indeed not simply about a relationship, it is about all of the outside forces and influences that define that relationship. It is about the eternal back-and-forth between the male and female principles in a confused and decadent modern world. Also, more importantly, it is about the group that rules this modern world – a secret elite that channels this struggle between the male and female principles in a specific and esoteric matter. The movie however does not spell out anything. Like all great art, messages are communicated through subtle symbols and mysterious riddles.

Eyes Wide Shut is just a porn movie unlike Stanley Kubrick's Lolita which was based on a novel.

So, in just 3 little words - I'm gonna describe Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut" to you, plain & simple - And, those 3 words are - boring - Boring - BORING!!!.... Yeah. I'd confidently say that that, pretty much, describes this piffling, snivelling, nothing-of-a-move to an absolute "T".
And, speaking about this being director Kubrick's last picture (made at the absolute end of his life) - What an utterly sad and pathetic whimper-of-a-movie "Eyes Wide Shut" was. Yeah. It sure was.

Instead of Kubrick's career and life going out with a colossal "bang!' here - This final film of his was such a totally forgettable and worthless offering that all I can honestly think of to say in response to it is - "Tsk. Tsk. To Stanley Kubrick.... Yeah. Shame-shame on you, Stanley. You really let me down, man!"

And, of course, casting those 2 totally talentless stars, Cruise and Kidman, as this film's lead characters was, without a doubt, the straw that broke this movie's back. There's no question about that.

I am still not sure if this film is a masterwork or a near miss. The film is trying to say something, but I am not sure that it manages to do that. The film is trying to comment on a lot of things. I think film students should watch it as part of their education. I am not sure it is a great film. It is almost a great film, but ends up being an unsatisfying film. It appears sexist, because it fails to properly explain it's deconstruction of male fantasy well. It appears to be objectifying, because it fails to contextualize its commentary on said objectification. Overall it fails, but it fails be inches. Almost a great film. Kubrick should have asked Verhoven for advice on this one.

Great cinematography does not make up for the parade of nude female model-type bodies and one-sided male sex fantasies. It's not the nudity/sexual content that offends me, but the bias toward female-as-object/commodity.

This is a 1999 American erotic thriller directed by Stanley Kubrick, loosely based on Arthur Schnitzler's 1926 novella Traumnovelle (Dream Story).
It was his last film, as he died six days after showing his final cut to Warner Bros. studios.
Although it seems quite serious on the surface, it actually turns out a flop.
What a pity this is Kubrick's last film!
The protagonist embarks on a night-long adventure, during which he infiltrates a massive masked orgy of an unnamed secret society.
This orgy contains a lot of nonsense.
For example, how should a woman be able to identify the doctor and redeem him?
The ending sounds quite foolish---if not absolutely out of the wife's mind.
