I wish to paint a photo-realistic sky of 'storybook clouds' on my living-room ceiling.
Obviously, watercolor isn't exactly the medium of choice, for creating the wispy veils of Cirrus, Stratus and Cumulus........... on an INVERTED CANVAS!
There's an abundance of how-to's espousing quick & easy techniques, like sponge-painting, to render vague facsimiles of a skyscape.
However, did I mention I wanted mine to be photo-realistic?
That requires a tad more homework.
"The Watercolor Skies and Clouds" is a great tutorial for how to SEE the relationships between brushstrokes and the effects they can render, color transitions that imbue the impression of height, and proportions from a fixed viewpoint that give the perception of distant scope.
Thinking in terms of how various mediums are manipulated to achieve specific results....
is the first step to wielding their tools with skill.
