There were moments I loved and moments I simply couldn't take seriously at all. Overall, a dark novel that suprised me in multiple ways.

"March" is well-written, certainly. Brooks does an admirable job of capturing the inner struggles of a man who too frequently makes decisions based on self-centered motivations, then finds himself in a situation he didn't intend and for which he isn't prepared. I also understand that Brooks based her Peter March on Louisa May Alcott's father's journals. Still, his character doesn't ring true to the original character Alcott created, who seemed much more certain and less conflicted. I couldn't reconcile the difference, and that kept me from liking the book more.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this novel. It's so well written, and the tie-ins to Little Women are masterfully done. I loved how Brooks told the story mostly from Mr. March's point of view, but near the end Marmee got a turn to tell her story. Highly recommended historical fiction.
