The day that Katie Elder is buried, her four sons return home to Clearwater, Texas, to pay their last respects. It is a he-man story, as well as, a drama of the maternal influence of Katie Elder, her sacrifice, love and incredible valor. The hopes and aspirations for her sons is movingly communicated from beginning to conclusion.

Great movie, but the ages of the oldest and youngest don't jibe. John Wayne looks old enough to be Michael Anderson's grandfather.

"The Sons of Katie Elder" is a great western classic. John Wayne is getting older now, so this is the last movie where he acts like he can take any man on. He has a fine cast with Dean Martin, Michael Anderson and Earl Holliman playing his brothers. John Wayne being the oldest he tries to lead the others out of trouble. I won't spoil the movie for you, but this is another great script for John Wayne. "The Sons of Katie Elder" is a fine tribute to a great western film star.

The Sons of Katie Elder ---- (DVD - 2001 / Orig. c - 1965) ---- I've viewed this movie many times, now I have my portable DVD player. ---- Which means I can hear all that is said or stop watching and watch the rest later. ---- John Wayne is one of my favorite Stars and are the rest of the cast in this movie. ---- There are only a few movies of those days (when the movie was made), that I have not seen. Love them all because they are Actors with many talents. That is rare in todays world. ---- I'm sure you will Enjoy this show. ---- RichardPaul (finished 6 - 12 - 13)

My second favorite collaboration of John Wayne and Dean Martin ("Rio Bravo" is my first). Outstanding classic Western. Great cast, including George Kennedy; Earl Holliman; a young Dennis Hopper getting smacked around by everybody; Paul Fix (Marshal Micah Torrance in "The Rifleman" TV series) as yet another sheriff... Dramatic, driving score by Elmer Bernstein. Just an all around wholesome, entertaining Western I've seen countless times, and will see countless more. Trivia: Production of this film was delayed from September of '64 to January of '65 after John Wayne was diagnosed with lung cancer. After Wayne's surgery to remove a cancerous lung and two ribs, he insisted on doing his own stunts, and nearly contracted pneumonia after being dragged into a river. The name "Kate Elder", was one of several names used by Mary Katherine Horony Cummings, better known as "Big Nose Kate", a Western icon and sometime companion of Doc Holliday. FIVE STARS.
