This is a 1937 American drama directed by Sidney Franklin, based on the 1931 novel of the same name by Nobel Prize-winning author Pearl S. Buck.
Although the protagonist couple are white, they play quite well.
Pearl Buck intended the film to be cast with all Chinese or Chinese-American actors.
Producer Irving Thalberg also envisioned casting only Chinese actors, but American audiences were not ready for such a film.
What a pity!
In any case, it is a good movie with the genuine-looking Chinese landscape.

The Good Earth was made in 1937 and was based on the classic novel by Pearl S. Buck. It takes place in China and is the story of a young mans life and the lessons he learns along the way. The movie stars Paul Muni, who stars as a young farmer named Wang. He falls in love with a peasant girl named O-Lan. Their love story is just as beautiful as the day it came out over 75 years ago. China is still farmed much the way it is shown in the "Good Earth". See a film classic with a romantic story and real meaning in its message. The "Good Earth" will never be lost. It is too precious to ever forget!
