Red is a very powerful and touching novel. It follows the Cinderella story of Becky Lynn Lee, who, escaping from her abusive family and town runs away, drawn by the dreams and illusions of Hollywood. This book follows her from a small time beauty assistant to one of the top models in the business, and the characters are very deep and stay true to their actions and consistent throughout the whole novel. I found the transformation of Becky Lynn from someone who is timid, shy, and self-deprecating to a woman of confidence, self-assurance, and beauty amazing and realistic. There were, of course, some dramatization, but nothing so far-fetched as to throw me out of the story's flow. Overall, I really loved this book. It was a page-turner, and I couldn't put it down. I really recommend this! However, the book is quite graphic and rather explicit, so I caution younger aged readers.

the book deals with rape of a young girl and her struggle to overcome it.
even though becky life is not easy and the author focused on other people she stayed true to her characters and that is hard to do when the subject is family, rape and homosexuality along with other points other might find. the book had me hooked not for the subject matter that was part of it but because we say how it made becky feel to have nothing and gain herself through out the book. Spindler is one master storyteller and even though this not like her other books it was a great and insightful read.

Definitely a page turner, but with weak writing and simplistic characters, this is little more than a trashy soap opera.
