Amazing: the life of a boy-who-isn't a boy (Sonia), together with her son Theo and Wazir who is like a son to her. The horrifying details of her captivity with others by the Pashtun rebels. Once again, the theme that these fundamentalists fear women for their intelligence and strength and are kept as uneducated captives, held invisible by the burqa/chador. An intense and informative book.

MGruber's presentation of Pashtun culture was a real plus to this tale of family over country loyalty

I would have given this 5 stars if it were 70 pages shorter... the cultural info on Pashtun society was good. And a main character who is an ex-circus performer/ Jungian therapist made a grand hostage AND heroine!

Michael Gruber is surely one of the best--and smartest--thriller writers working today. This complex tale of terrorism, faith, and family is no exception.
