1892. Lady Emily Hargreave's well-intentioned husband, Colin, persuades her to recuperate at his family's estate in Normandy. While out riding, Emily happens on the butchered corpse of a woman, later identified as an escaped inmate from an insane asylum outside Rouen. The nature of the victim's wounds suggests that Jack the Ripper has crossed the Channel to France.

This series is SUCH a mixed bag for me. I enjoyed this one more than the previous installment, and have found all the books so far to be reasonably enjoyable, but still lacking a certain indefinable quality to make them books that I love. Having said that, there were things I liked about this: the aftermath from Emily's miscarriage felt realistic to me, and the constant negotiations between Emily and Colin about how their marriage is going to work, what freedoms Emily will have, how Colin reconciles himself to the sort of woman he married, etc. I thought were really interesting and well-handled. My main request would be that the next book NOT involve Emily shedding tears in almost every chapter. Also, more Sebastian Capet, please!

Probably the best book of the series I have read so far. The plot is darker and more captivating as are the characters.
