Stranded in a frigid mountain wilderness after a plane crash, a gifted surgeon and a young magazine writer are forced to rely on each other for survival while confronting painful truths about their personal lives.
On a stormy winter night, two strangers wait for a flight at the Salt Lake City airport. Ashley Knox is an attractive, successful writer, who is flying East for her much anticipated wedding. Dr. Ben Payne has just wrapped up a medical conference and is also eager to get back East for a slate of surgeries he has scheduled for the following day. When the last outgoing flight is cancelled due to a broken de-icer and a forthcoming storm, Ben finds a charter plane that can take him around the storm and drop him in Denver to catch a connection. And when the pilot says the single engine prop plane can fit one more, if barely, Ben offers the seat to Ashley knowing that she needs to get back just as urgently. And then the unthinkable happens. The pilot has a heart attack mid-flight and the plane crashes into the High Uintas Wilderness -- one of the largest stretches of harsh and remote land in the United States. Ben, who has broken ribs and Ashley, who suffers a terrible leg fracture, along with the pilot's dog, are faced with an incredibly harrowing battle to survive. Fortunately, Ben is a medical professional and avid climber (and in a lucky break, has his gear from a climb earlier in the week). With little hope for rescue, he must nurse Ashley back to health and figure out how they are going to get off the mountain, where the temperature hovers in the teens. Meanwhile, Ashley soon realizes that the very private Ben has some serious emotional wounds to heal as well. He explains to Ashley that he is separated from his beloved wife, but in a long standing tradition, he faithfully records messages for her on his voice recorder reflecting on their love affair. As Ashley eavesdrops on Ben's tender words to his estranged wife she comes to fear that when it comes to her own love story, she's just settling. And what's more: she begins to realize that the man she is really attracted to, the man she may love, is Ben. As the days on the mountains become weeks, their survival become increasingly perilous. How will they make it out of the wilderness and if they do, how will this experience change them forever?

After watching the movie, I found the book much more engaging and emotional. Ben and Ashley's struggles are gripping, and Ben's recorded messages to his wife kept me turning the pages.

This relatively short book was big on emotions and peril. The plane crash early in the book sets the stage for the struggle these two people endure to make their way back to civilization. The wilderness details were clearly well-researched and the book had me grabbing for a tissue more than once. Reminded me of Nicholas Sparks at times. Makes me want to read his other novel.

Fast read, just finished within 2 days! Loved it....adopted into the movie with Idris Elba and Kate Winslet in it.
“All my life, I’d struggled in the waves, tossed, turned, thrown about like a rag doll, forever trying to surface, screaming for air, but somewhere some unseen hand held me beneath the foam and froth. But in that moment, you held back the waves, lifted me above the surface, and filled me.”

The writing in this book created a very vivid picture of the mountains the two characters are trapped on and the perilous journey they must undertake to get home. It is quite fortunate that one of the characters is an orthopedic surgeon (and a skilled mountain hiker), but if you can overlook those things, I think it's a very compelling read. The characters are likable and I hated to put the book down most of the time; I always wanted to know what would happen next.

This was an enjoyable read & well researched. After awhile you thought that it must be a non fiction story because it was so believeable. It's a story that is hard to put down. Can't wait for the movie!

Two people survive a plane crash, but are badly injured. Stranded, they are forced to trust each other in order to find safety in the deserted wilderness. The Mountain Between Us is a story about survival, but it also becomes a love story

Wonderful book, although it did drag a bit in the middle. Great twist at the end! Definitely recommend it, especially since the trailers for the upcoming movie look like they changed the story a fair bit.

Loved this book. Finished it in two days. It's a whirlwind of adventure and emotion that completely swept me away. The flashbacks and the segments where the main character recited into the recorder felt a little jarring which is why I didn't give it the full five stars, but I'm definitely looking forward to the movie coming out this summer.

Just finished this book and am sorry that it's over. The surprise at the end really got me, even though I had started to suspect something. I loved the fact that it was a wilderness survival story and enjoyed the bond that developed between the two main characters. I'll definitely be checking out this author's other books. Great read!

This was a great book. For a survival story where the ending is usually predictable, this one caught me totally off guard. Once I reached the end of the book I wanted to pick it up and start it over knowing what I now knew.

"It may sound cliche-ish, but I married a woman who fits me. I'm one half of a two-piece puzzle."
