In the late eighties and early nineties, Aki Kaurismäki (The Match Factory Girl), the master of the deadpan, fashioned a waggish fish-out-of-water tale about a U.S. tour by the worst rock-and-roll band in the world. Set contains five Leningrad music videos directed by Kaurismake.

"Jesus saves, Moses invests."
Don't be fooled by the name, they're actually Finnish! This is among the best Finnish movies I've ever seen. This is among the only Finnish movies I've seen. This 3-disc set in the Criterion Eclipse series includes two films, 5 music videos and a concert film. The band started out as a joke for the first film, "Leningrad Cowboys Go America," but then they actually became a real band and perform with the Russian Alexandrov Red Army Chorus and Dance Assembly (it's as strange as it sounds) in the concert movie in this set. They do unlikely covers of Tom Jones, Bob Dylan, and perhaps most oddly, Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama." The two feature films are both road movies and have a similar hipster deadpan style, low-key pace and offbeat characters as Jim Jarmusch, who appears in a cameo. The first, in which the hapless band wanders across America is the best, but the second is good too, following them from Mexico to NYC (where they steal the nose of the Statue of Liberty) to Europe. Their hair and shoes truly have to be seen to be believed. "Do you have rock and roll? Can I buy?"
