A mermaid story featuring a boy! This is actually very rare. It also incorporates a large range of other imaginary creatures, like vampires and werewolfs.

Whoa, this is a really good book! I couldn't put it down, it was so intense! I would list this as a must-read; thrilling, epic, adventure, mystery, and a bit of love! And this isn't about a mermaid, like most fishy tales; it's about a teen who has no idea that he's a merman!

I really enjoyed this book and thought the characters were realistic. The plot was really cool too, usually, its a girl finding out she's a mermaid. It's a good book all the way around!! So if your reading this, read this Novel

The Vicious Deep written by Zoraida Cordova was originally published May 2012. This is the story of Tristan Hart a teenage boy living in New York. He is a lifeguard at Coney Island Beach and while on duty one day a bad storm rolls in. There is a giant wave coming toward land, but Tristan sees a person in the water and starts swimming out to help them. The next thing he finds himself washed up on the shore and people are telling him that three days have passed. Tristan can’t remember what has happened to him during this time but he knows that he has changed. Suddenly he wants to be in the ocean or near water and when he is in his bathtub that night suddenly he has fins where his legs should be, and finds out that he is actually a merman. That’s why he hasn’t met anyone on his mother’s side of the family. Soon Tristan is immersed in this new world of mythical creatures he never knew existed. He needs to learn fast because his grandfather is the Sea King and he is looking for an heir to take his throne. Tristan needs to determine if he is up for the challenge, and if this new life is something he wants.

I absolutely adored this story. It was like an emotional rollercoaster and I was constantly wondering what was going to happen next. I actually found myself gasping aloud at times! I think it was really smart to have the main character to be male because not only will that mean more guys will be attracted to the story but usually we hear stories about merpeople through a female perspective. I thought that Tristan was convincing. He is thrust into this new world and he has to decide does he want anything to do with it? I also really liked the other characters especially the strict Kurt and his fun loving sister Thalia. I hope in the future we learn more about them and their histories.

This book really reminded me of the Harry Potter series in a good and new way. Of course we have the male character who finds himself immersed in a new world. He is famous as the boy who survives this perfect storm and the challenge that he is presented with is reminiscent of the TriWizard tournament in a way. I really have high hopes for the next books in the series, and as aforementioned I can’t wait to see what happens with these characters. This whole world fascinates me so I will wait with bated breaths for the sequel which is called Savage Blue, and according to Goodreads will be out sometime in 2013.

This book will definitely appeal to boys and girls alike since it has adventure, comedy and a little romance. It was a fun read and I think that a lot of people will enjoy it since it keeps you guessing until the end and even after that. Pick this up if you want a fun summer read to get your imagination flowing and your heart racing.
