"In the early 20th century, while studying world mythology, Joseph Campbell discovered a pattern hidden in every story ever told and he called it 'the hero's journey.' Finding Joe explores how the hero's journey is relevant and essential in today's world. It provides a narrative for how to live a fully realized life, or as Campbell would simply state, 'follow your bliss.' The film takes us on an inspirational quest of self-discovery. As you slay dragons and uncover treasures, you just may find that the holy grail you seek is closer than you think." - Container.

This was the director's personal experience with the Joseph Campbell's universal Hero's Journey Myth. This is a low budget but effective interpretation. I really enjoyed the children playing out the myth. What child hasn't? The child actors were the director's son and his neighborhood friends. It felt like the kids had created their own costumes and were playing out The Myth as a demonstration of how universal it is. I appreciated the director keeping to what he knew, rather than trying to pan all cultures to prove Joe's theory. If that is what you are looking for in a Joseph Campbell film then I would suggest viewing the Bill Moyer JC series. I give it 4 stars

I wanted to like this video based on the earnest interview with the director and the theme but ... after opening viewing I couldn't escape feeling like I was watching an infomercial rather than a heartfelt and meaty film (escuse the term meaty vegetarians:). Also the parts with the child are entirely a boy child -- the dragon costume looks super amateurish -- most of the people interviewed for words of wisdom were caucasian male. The wisdom shared felt simplistic and imparted from a priviledged position. Those people who have had to really struggle won't feel grateful at being offered more non-nutritional porridge to drink -- goes down smooth but does nothing.
