When I first started watching Ripper Street back in Series One, I had fairly low expectations. But not only did it exceed those expectations, it has also steadily improved over each series into something quite respectable. Three is the best yet, serving up more social history that was such a good part of Series Two. Be warned that there is some really graphic violence, up close and personal.

Some good guest stars. None better than Joseph Mawle as recurring character Jedidiah Shine.

This series from BBC has great acting and the settings are visually impressive. A good find for me. Now I have to back-track to watch Seasons 1 & 2. Watching Season 3 stand alone is doable too. Definitely one of the better TV dramas around.

The father-daughter reunion is a bit artificial but I still like this fast moving series.

Season 3 starts with a horrific train "accident", caused by robbers, and the team of 3 are hard-pressed to solve this one. Finely drawn characters, and of course Inspector Reid (Macfayden), chews the scenery with his intense acting. Previous mysteries including his daughter's disappearance are solved along the way. This series does not shy away from pretty graphic violence, but series 3 seems even bloodier than the others.

Not the best season but Reid is as intense as ever. He is my favorite character on TV since Eva Gabor played Lisa Douglas. He may have the most intense line I have heard in years. In Macfayden's classic voice, "You are watched, bxxxx." I put the x's there but you know. Great cliffhanger so Season 4 better be out soon.
