Building a fire to warm your home is incredibly satisfying. Splitting logs, stacking and seasoning the wood, and then building a fire is the height of self-sufficiency. Norwegian Wood is a practical and inspiring book that teaches you how to do all of those things. A runaway best-seller in Europe, the book provides in-depth information about tree types, wood-stacking methods, tools, and stoves; it also examines the history of man's longstanding need for warmth and his passion for open fire.

Essential reading for all who burn wood. Thorough yet accessible and enlightening.

I personally don't have a lot of experienced with chopping and stacking wood (or any, for that matter). But I would imagine that if your home was heated by a wood stove, this skill would be really important. Really, really important. I get why this book is actually written quite sincerely. It amazed me and made in laugh in turn. This would be a blast for a book club (particularly if you have several Scandinavian members) as well as to show the most outdoorsy person you know. Read it!
