Holy cow. This film turned out to be something different than I was expecting, and it had me glued to the screen. It's a moody psychological thriller (NOT an action thriller), that moves slowly but steadily, to a conclusion which is anything but inevitable. Atom Egoyan's best film to date, I think. The story centers on two issues, dementia and the holocaust, in a way that, I'm certain, neither has been dealt with before. It is a completely original story which, for thinkers, offers a powerful perspective on the nature of memory. May also be Christopher Plummer's best performance. And, Martin Landau is perfect in one of his last performances. If psycho-thrillers are your thing, this is one to watch.

A quality movie, overall. Well written script with interesting characters, an understated tenseness throughout, and an unexpected twist. A great performance by Christopher Plummer.

I wasn't too thrilled sitting through this, but I think it stands up very well on reflection. I compare it to biblical material in that there are plenty of inconsistencies and improbabilities, and also a sense of truth and wonder. If one confines one's considerations only to the implications of 'remember', meaning might reveal itself in all its wonder.

Great movie. A man suffering from Dementia goes on trip to find a Nazi criminal and also finds himself.

Wonderful acting, some surprising plot twists, and in spite of the improbability of some of the events, a great story. One of Atom Egoyan's better films.

Average outing from Atom Egoyan- not his worst but not his best either. Worth watching for Christopher Plummer- it's a masterclass in acting.

Escape from a nursing home, escape from a hospital, quality hotel check-ins without a credit card, police unable to trace the movements, double border crossing using the same trick - this movie certainly insults the common sense of viewers, let alone of the professionals who work in these services. Even considering the dementia of the main character, his behaviour in the movie does not support the final twist. Best moments - great acting from all the well-known German actors.

[extends hand]

Zev Gutman: [shakes hand] Nice to meet you, Tyler. My name is Zev.

Tyler: That's a strange name.

Zev Gutman: In Hebrew, it means wolf.

Tyler: Cool.

There were clue crumbs throughout the film and these quotes did not help me to see the whole picture until the last scenes:

--You're lying.
-No. It's the first time I haven't lied in 70 years.
===
-He couldn't have known what he was doing.
--He knew exactly what he was doing.
-What? What are you talking about, Max?
===
Six months ago, God smiled upon me when you moved to the senior housing community. I immediately recognized you from Auschwitz, although you did not remember me. We are the last living survivors from our prison block. Besides me, you are the only person who could still recognize the face of the man who murdered our families.

-Nice to meet you, Tyler. My name's Zev.
--That's a strange name.
-In Hebrew, it means "Wolf."
--Cool!
===
MAX: I have planned everything for you. You must follow these steps precisely. Cross them off as you
accomplish each task.
===
--Were you at Auschwitz?
-No! We are too old for lies. I didn't know about Auschwitz until after the war. I was in North Africa. With General Rommel.
--You have proof?
-Yes. Over there. When I became a US citizen, the immigration officer asked me if I had ever associated with the Nazi government of Germany or worked at a concentration camp. I told the officer what I'll tell you. Yes, I served for my country. I was a soldier. I was a proud German and that's what the men did. I'm still proud of my service.
