Bogart's role in this film is refreshingly raw, as he portrays a character much darker than his typical movie persona. The initial plot of the film - the murder of a young coat check girl - is utilized to put question into the mind of another young woman that falls for Dix (Bogart). Watching the characters slowly move from the happy, honeymoon phase of love to the questioning, temperamental reality of getting to know someone still reads well decades later.

A great classic film noir.

I actually took this movie out because of backround artwork that I saw in a bookstore that referenced this movie. Fianced by Humphrey Bogart This I think was his attempt to breakaway from the types of roles that he was playing and in my opinion he was partically successful. Perhaps if his wife Lauren Bacall was playing opposite him we would have gotten a different type of performance. He was attempting to play a screenwriter with boarderline personality. Is he or is he not a Murderer ? I sort of belived it but I NEEDED to Believe it so I give it a O-K rating. Not a bad movie. A film Noirish type of treatment.

This is a 1950 film noir directed by Nicholas Ray.
Dixon "Dix" Steele is a down-on-his-luck screenwriter who has not had a hit since before the war.
Although Dix has an explosive temper, he is not the type of guy to kill a hat-check girl like Mildred in the first place.
Nobody suspects Dix, who is played by Humphrey Bogart, I suppose.
Besides, Dix has no motives to kill her.
So I guessed that her boyfriend was the culprit.
The detective denied it at first, but the boyfriend confessed in the end.
So, in a sense, Laurel was forced to distrust Dix, manipulated by an unreasonable and contrived storyline.
It is too bad and too late for both lovers to salvage their relationship.

Powerful performance by Bogie. I can't help wondering if he's channeling some of his real life persona here, the side the public doesn't see. So, not your typical Bogart. The black and white lighting is excellent........especially the illumination on Bogart's face when he describes a murder re-enactment. Underrated Gloria Grahame as his love interest and solid direction by Nicholas Ray. Strange musical score accompanies some scenes.

I love cynical movies about alienation and they don’t usually get me too down, but here Bogart plays the alienated hero (with major issues) so well that this is brutal to the point of being tough to watch. Still, it is so masterfully done (and with an ending that doesn’t pull any punches) that I’d rewatch this one anytime!

A murder is committed early in the story, but 99%
of the story is dedicated to two people that were not involved in/with the deed. A disappointing offering.
Don't bother watching the stupidity. Grade D-.

Another goodie from Bogie! He plays a down on his luck writer who falls in love with a woman who does not quite trust him. His lover is skeptical since Bogart's character has a bad tmper which sometimes gets him to hit people, even his friends. A sad movie but a good one.
