"As Paris teeters on the edge of the German occupation, a young French woman closes the door to her late grandmother's treasure-filled apartment, unsure if she'll ever return"-- Provided by publisher.
An elusive courtesan, Marthe de Florian cultivated a life of art and beauty, casting out all recollections of her impoverished childhood in the dark alleys of Montmartre. With Paris on the brink of German occupation, she shares her story with her granddaughter Solange Beaugiron, using her prized possessions to reveal her innermost secrets. Most striking of all are a beautiful string of pearls and a magnificent portrait of Marthe painted by the Italian artist Giovanni Boldini.

Exquisitely told and partly based upon truth, this story explores the lives of two French women and their search for love during the Belle Epoque and the beginning of World War II.

THE VELVET HOURS is wonderful historic fiction inspired by the real-life Parisian apartment of Marthe de Florian that remained abandoned for 70 years before its rediscovery in 2010. Author Alyson Richman’s writing is seductive, full of sumptuous descriptions. The story of 2 women, Marthe and her grand-daughter Solange, each in turn seeking freedom and independence during the Belle Epoque (the “Beautiful Era”, 1888-1917) and the beginning of WWII (1938-1940) was compelling and kept my interest. This was my first Alyson Richman novel, and will definitely not be my last.
