This film shows the Police Story series going in a more dramatic direction. There barely, if any comedy in this fifth instalment in the series unlike the last four. The previous four films mixed high action sequences with some comedy mixed in, but this film has a much darker tone to it. Just like Shinjuku Incident (which came out after this) Jackie went for the more dramatic role in the film and in this film it worked out pretty good, now I don’t enjoy the film as much as the previous ones because of the missing comedy, but the stunts and choreography make up for that in this film. This film really isn’t a sequel though, it is actually a reboot of the series but as I’ve said before in a way different tone. With all this being said the film’s stunts aren’t as spectacular as the previous ones though especially in the first three films, but it does carry over the heavy action from the previous ones though. Jackie sports a much more mature and serious look in this film and doesn’t shy away laying a beat down on someone, and throughout the story the events that take place make you want to ask yourself if this is actually a Jackie film, the rest of the cast in the film support it very well and the acting is pretty much top notch. This is probably one of the best films to come out of Hong Kong cinemas in a while and it pretty much stands out amongst other Chan films. Overall the film gets a 4/5 stars, the only con I could think of for this film was the lack of Jackie’s comedy but it was honestly a terrific effort.
