A decade ago, Darrow was the hero of the revolution he believed would break the chains of the Society, and abolish the color-coded caste system. But the Rising has shattered everything, and brought endless war. New foes emerge to threaten what has been earned, and throughout the worlds other destinies entwine with Darrow's to change his fate forever. A young Red girl flees tragedy in her refugee camp, and achieves for herself a new life she could never have imagined. An ex-soldier broken by grief is forced to steal the most valuable thing in the galaxy -- or pay with his life. And Lysander au Lune, the heir in exile to the Sovereign, wanders the stars with his mentor, Cassius, haunted by the loss of the world that Darrow transformed, and dreaming of what will rise from its ashes.

I enjoyed the book, but my middle rating was more because the Red Rising trilogy was better. This book suffered from the multiple perspectives and pacing issues, and pacing was definitely NOT a problem in the first trilogy. I also found it harder to reconcile Darrow's poor decision-making throughout the book, especially towards the end. It was still a worthwhile read, but I would have preferred if the author had chosen one character to follow, even if it wasn't Darrow. (To be fair, I only glanced at the synopsis, so I thought we were going to be following the "young Red girl").

The fourth book in the Red Rising series, Iron Gold manages to keep the same action packed pacing of the first three books. The story takes place 10 years after Mourning Star, and we learn that the fragile, post-Society republic that The Reaper helped create teeters on collapse. Darrow, hero of the rising, wages a popular yet illegal war against the remaining vestiges of The Society. While successful, the government begins to wonder if their general can be held accountable by the ruling Senate. Darrow also begins to believe the myth of himself, thinking that he is the only person capable of saving the Republic from its own weaknesses. While the first three Rising books were about revolution, this one is mainly about governance, and how the line between heroes and tyrants can be blurred. The story was also full of analogies to the Roman classics, with Darrow being an analogy to Julius Caesar, Lysander to Augustus, and Cassius Bellona to Mark Anthony, among others.

Though it's the beginning of a new trilogy, I would not recommend Iron Gold to people who haven't read the first 3 Rising books. It's good sci-fi on its own, but the added context of the original three stories make it great sci-fi. I can't wait for the next chapter.

A big thank you to NetGalley and Random House for making this ARC available. I have been reading the series from the beginning and this new installment is a strong contender for the best one yet.

This epic solar system battle pits the Reaper against the Ash Lord. In the midst of the struggle are four characters -- three of them flawed from their experiences in the past struggles and one a young girl freed from the mines of Mars. As the story advances, we see these individuals like pawns on a chess board beginning to converge as we reach the heart-pounding climax and cliffhanger. If you haven't started reading this series yet, add it to your list of TBR for 2018.
