Book tells the story of Kate Warne, the first female detective hired by the famed Pinkerton agency. Little is really known about Kate so this is truly historic fiction. Light reading, but enjoyable. I’d recommend Karen Abbott’s 'Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy: Four Women Undercover in the Civil War' for a better telling of the Civil War period in this book.

Although this book wasn't quite what I was expecting, I enjoyed getting to know and imagine the tough and smart Kate Warne throughout her career. The real couldn't-put-it-down parts of the book didn't come until the end, but it's well worth sticking with it. I would recommend this book to fans of mystery, strong female characters, and historical fiction.

Part of me wanted to to turn right around, march back in there, and address Mortenson face-to-face, berate him for his crude assumption. Part of me wanted to crawl into bed and disappear under a blanket, ashamed anyone could think so ill of me. I was uncertain and confused, but as I walked, the emotions settled into a low, simmering anger.
