What an incredible waste of talent and money that went into the making of this film.

Written and directed by Darren Aronofsky in 2017, this American psychological horror-thriller explores the mind of a yound woman whose seemingly tranquil life with her husband at their country home gets disrupted by the arrival of a mysterious couple.
As a thriller it appears excellent into the two-thirds of the film.
Then it goes down to the stupidity and nonsense.
I hate this kind of movie to the hilt.

Yikes! The making of the movie, the "extra", was more interesting than the movie. The celebrity interviews during the promotion of the movie said it was full of symbolism ... nothing thought provoking or inspiring Watch it to see the celebrities or learn from the making of the movie.

Found it confusing. Much like a dream which seems to sort of make sense, but doesn't. I like a good story and this isn't it.

***spoiler***

Honestly, I don't know if Darren Aronofsky likes women. I'm not trying to be shocking, but I was talking to my husband about this movie, and previous ones of his and what I find hard about his films is what they make me feel like as a woman. His movies are always beautifully shot, and the actors he chooses are superb and bring the misery/angst/darkness out of the roles he wants from them. Jennifer Lawrence is no exception. She played the perfect Aronofsky weak woman who, sort of, comes out of her weakness and shows some strength only to die. Or I suppose in another movie only to be subjected to some humiliating sexual act. Oh, also, if you happen to be squeamish about children being murdered this may not be your bag. HEY, I said there would be spoilers.

Anyway, did I enjoy watching this movie, sure. Would I recommend it to other people, absolutely not. Not because it's not good, but because I don't want anyone to watch this movie and think, "oh weird, my friend Lou recommended this movie to me and it's real messed up and now I'm not sure I can be friends with her."

What a long and drawn out waste of an evening. For the remaining people in line. My advice, give it a miss.

I am not sure what I think of this film. In some ways I was thinking that this was a commentary of popularity, fame and fanatical demands upon the stars that they worship, however by the ending, I did not know what the director, Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler: 2008; Black Swan: 2010; Noah: 2014), was trying to say.
There was plenty of talent here, with superb acting by Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle: 2013; Joy: 2015; Red Sparrow: 2018), the husband, played by Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men: 2007; Skyfall: 2012; Loving Pablo: 2017), the doctor, played by Ed Harris (The History of Violence: 2005; Snowpiercer: 2013; Westworld: 2016 - 2018), and his wife, Michelle Pfeiffer (I Am Sam: 2001; Dark Shadows: 2012; The Family: 2013).
This film was not a bad film, but just got too weird for me and went over the top of trying to say something that I never got the point of.
At times beautifully shot, and other times very bizarre, surreal, with graphic violence and too bizarre, that made me shake my head in doubt and confusion, wondering what was the point.
No bonus material to help with what the director was trying to do.

unusual, strange movie with interesting sound and pictures angle effects. amazing thriller movie, with twisted story that keep you on your toes until the end. Like all great mothers : " I give, i give and I give and it is never enough" Until you take it all. Great acting performance of Jennifer Lawrence.

Martin Scorsese on this film:

After I had a chance to see mother!, I was even more disturbed by this rush to judgment, and that's why I wanted to share my thoughts. People seemed to be out for blood, simply because the film couldn't be easily defined or interpreted or reduced to a two-word description. Is it a horror movie, or a dark comedy, or a biblical allegory, or a cautionary fable about moral and environmental devastation? Maybe a little of all of the above, but certainly not just any one of those neat categories.

Is it a picture that has to be explained? What about the experience of watching mother!? It was so tactile, so beautifully staged and acted — the subjective camera and the POV reverse angles, always in motion … the sound design, which comes at the viewer from around corners and leads you deeper and deeper into the nightmare … the unfolding of the story, which very gradually becomes more and more upsetting as the film goes forward. The horror, the dark comedy, the biblical elements, the cautionary fable — they're all there, but they're elements in the total experience, which engulfs the characters and the viewers along with them. Only a true, passionate filmmaker could have made this picture, which I'm still experiencing weeks after I saw it.
