“The Lightning Thief” is an excellent start to an outstanding series. “The Lightning Thief” included genres of fantasy, greek mythology, and fiction. Ranging from the half-bloods to Camp Half-Blood itself, it reminded me a lot of the Harry Potter series. “The Lightning Thief” had an amazing plot that made me want to keep reading, monsters described in a way where I could feel their essence, characters with great character development, and overall it was written very well. I finished this book quickly and was dying to get my hands on the next book. If you read the Harry Potter series and enjoyed it, this may be your next favourite series. Without a doubt, I would recommend reading this book for ages 9+. 5/5 stars. - @Riddikulus of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library The Lightning Thief is the first book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series and it is a stellar hit. You realize later on how much we needed this book to understand and see Percy’s character develop along the way. Percy Jackson has always been a troubled kid and has been kicked out of almost every school he has been to. On top of that; he’s dyslexic and doesn’t have a lot of friends other than Grover. But when a freak accident involving his mean teacher turning into a monster and attempting to kill Percy happens, he is thrust into a world of Greek gods and sees his world turn upside down. His best friend Grover turns out to be a satyr ordered to protect him and Mr. B is Chiron, the hundreds-old centaur in charge of Camp Half-Blood. But things don’t even stop there; Percy is the son of Poseidon and one of the most powerful in the camp. You get caught into a tornado of crazy events alongside Percy and feel as though you, too, live in Camp Half Blood and you are a demigod. Meet Annabeth, Grover, Luke, and all the demigods and monsters in this thrilling first book with much more coming. - @jewelreader of the Teen Review Board of the Hamilton Public Library This is the first book of an amazing 5 book series. It introduces us to a quirky, clever and relatable character as our main protagonist named Percy Jackson. He is a sarcastic 12-year-old from Manhattan who is thrown in between a war, a war between Greek Gods. We also meet characters such as Grover, Percy's friend, who is given the task of protecting him but usually it is the other way around. We also meet Annabeth Chase, a smart, Hermione-like character who seems like just another bossy 12-year-old but Rick Riordan captures these characters' emotions and tells their backstories in such a beautiful way. The best thing about this book and the whole series is how the author takes real life settings that the readers have probably seen and shows them in a way we never think about.
