I really, really enjoyed this book. Even though it is post apocalyptic, the setting is more like the old west. This book is outdoor adventure, cat and mouse suspense, and family drama all rolled up together. I enjoy a strong, young protagonist so Elka grabbed me from page one. Loved her fierce spirit, strong independence, and mouth of a sailor. Her dialect made me think of Appalachian hill people and made her more endearing to me, but some readers may not like it. Great first book by this author. (Word of caution to more sensitive readers - there are some grisly subject matter and foul language in this book.)
