52 Rules to Aim, Shoot, and Score in This Game Called Life
May 13, 2017
“Sports teaches you character, it teaches you to play by the rules, it teaches you to know what it feels like to win and lose- it teaches you about life.” -Billie Jean King The Playbook is by the amazing author of The Crossover, Kwame Alexander. Here he’s compiled rules (short poems), quotes and stories to inspire his readers to accomplish amazing things. Through true stories of athletes we learn about the challenges that each faced as they worked to make their mark. Included is the story of Wilma Rudolf. Rudolf went from being a girl who could barely walk due to polio, to the fastest woman in the world and three time Olympic gold medalist. One of my favorite pieces from this collection is the inclusion of Michael Jordon’s failure stats. He’s missed more than 9,000 shots, lost almost 300 games, and has missed 26 game-winning shots. Working through these failures helped him to learn how to improve his game. We also learn more about Lebron James, Serena and Venus Williams and other amazing athletes. Kwame’s failures and successes as an athlete and beyond are also woven throughout the book. This is a fast read that’s full of pictures and quotes. It’s a perfect pep talk and fuel for making your dreams come to life. Great for readers ages 8 & up!
