Thank goodness for something different! While this story focuses on Chiron's life, a black boy growing up in a tough neighborhood, surrounded by drugs and drug dealers, there is a beautiful twist. This movie follows three stages of Chiron's life - "Little" when he a boy and starts to admire and be cared for by a man who happens to be a drug dealer. This man helps him escape his home from time to time, where his mom gets high and has company and doesn't want him around. "Chiron" when he is a teenager and fully accepts his sexuality, he very clearly is gay. "Black" when he is an adult and has "rebuilt" himself "hard" after a stint in jail following an incident in high school. He comes back to his childhood friend, the only man he's ever been with, a man he is in love with. There is so much going on in this movie, but it was done so beautifully and so differently from many movie of this style and genre.
