I wanted to love this one, and it did have some good touches. But the big problems are a too large cast, much of the dramatic momentum is absorbed by meetings, and there isn't much of a buildup. I think the film makers should've looked back to the original film more and followed it in two respects: delaying the big reveal and honing down the cast _early_ to a few memorable characters. Eventually, this version does find its central characters, but this is after we're introduced to literally dozens of others -- many of whom disappear after being introduced. Why the fanfare for someone I'm not going to have to track? (Don't get me wrong here. Shakespeare in theater and Robert Altman in film can handle huge casts and make me feel each one is, if not central, at least memorable and not merely another talking head on the screen. I'm not asking for Shakespearean drama for a Godzilla film, but just saying it's not impossible to work the large cast.) Okay, on the plus side, the monster and the tactics used against it were interesting.
