This is a pleasant, fun, fast YA read about a flawed young nobleman who learns some badly-needed lessons about his own power and privilege that easily apply to life today, and I applaud it having a bisexual man as protagonist. That said, I was distracted by how much Monty, the main character, felt less like an eighteenth-century nobleman or even an actual man, but like the kind of queer man a female writer produces for female readers--in other words, a slash trope. I also found the story bogged down in Barcelona and that the mix of medical and historic accuracy with supernatural elements didn't quite work (and I say this as someone who usually loves historical fantasy). A lot of young people and slash fans will love this novel, but as an avid adult YA reader, I found it works less for an adult audience.
